Food & Wine Experiences in Florence

Tuscan food is not complicated, but it is specific. Bistecca alla Fiorentina, ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, schiacciata, and cantucci dipped in Vin Santo all trace their roots to this city and the countryside surrounding it. Chianti Classico has been produced in the hills south of Florence for centuries, and the region's olive oil and cured meats are as central to the table as the wine. Food tours in the city often wind past the Ponte Vecchio and through the medieval streets between the Palazzo Vecchio and the river, which happen to be some of the most concentrated areas for traditional shops, markets, and historic eating spots. The experiences on this page cover everything from winery visits and market walks to hands-on cooking classes where you make the food yourself.

From Vineyard to Kitchen in Florence

  • Chianti wine tours: Half-day and full-day trips into the wine country south of the city, visiting working estates and tasting local production. Full-day options typically include a traditional dinner, making them a practical way to combine sightseeing with an evening meal.
  • Cooking classes: Hands-on sessions led by professional chefs covering the fundamentals of Tuscan cooking. Formats range from pasta and pastry workshops to full dinner classes where you prepare and eat a complete menu. Some sessions begin with a visit to a local market before heading to the kitchen.
  • Food tours: Guided walks through Florence's historic markets and neighborhoods, stopping to taste local products along the way. The San Lorenzo Market features on several routes as a starting point for understanding the city's food culture. Some tours also pass through the streets around the Florence Cathedral, where several of the city's oldest provisions shops are still trading.
  • Themed tastings and experiences: Smaller, more focused options including wine window tours tracing Florence's historic buchette del vino, pizza and gelato workshops, and combination experiences that pair cooking with a meal. The wine window tradition is particularly well preserved in the neighborhoods around Palazzo Pitti on the south side of the Arno.

Practical Tips for Your Food Experience in Florence

Most tours and classes meet centrally, but confirm the exact meeting point on each product page before your visit, as locations vary. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, check the individual listing in advance since menus are often set and substitutions may be limited. Experiences that include wine or other alcohol may require proof of age, so carry valid ID. Morning start times are common for market-based tours and cooking classes, since markets are at their best early in the day.
